Máximo Quiles fought for victory until the very last metres of the season's opening race. The CFMOTO Aspar Team rider was the only one able to keep up with David Almansa, who claimed his first Moto3 victory at the Thai Grand Prix. Quiles managed a very demanding race in Buriram and was on the verge of achieving his first win of the year, but ultimately crossed the finish line in second place, just three thousandths behind. Marco Morelli, the other half of the CFMOTO Aspar Team also passed the Thai GP race with flying colours, finishing eighth, his best result to date.
Máximo Quiles got off to a good start after starting qualifying on the second row of the grid. Despite being unfamiliar with the circuit, the Spaniard quickly adapted to the Buriram track and was in podium position from the early laps. The CFMOTO Aspar Team rider was able to maintain a very high pace throughout the 19 laps to increase his lead over his pursuers. Halfway through the race, the leading group had shrunk even further and the victory was decided between two riders, one of whom was Quiles, who waited for the right moment to try to overtake his rival. After succeeding in the last corner, the Moto3 victory was decided in the final metres and Máximo Quiles crossed the finish line in second place, although by a very narrow margin of three thousandths. The rider thus secured his first podium of the year, his tenth in the category.
On the other hand, his teammate Marco Morelli achieved his best result in Moto3. The Spanish-Argentinian also faced the Thai circuit for the first time and managed to climb up the field to catch up with the leading group. The CFMOTO Aspar Team rider went from strength to strength in a race in which high temperatures played an important role in strategy. Finally, Morelli finished his first race with the team in eighth position.
In Moto2 category, Dani Holgado approached the Thai Grand Prix race in good spirits after a great weekend of work. The Spanish rider started from the front row of the grid, which allowed him to take the lead after a multiple overtaking manoeuvre in the first few corners. However, an early crash involving his teammate David Alonso and other rivals forced the race to be stopped after only three laps. After the restart, Holgado remained in first place, although the race was stopped a second time and was finally reduced to seven laps. This race distance hurt the Spaniard who, although he tried to maintain a strong pace to close the gap, barely had time to move up positions and fight for the victory. He finished in third position to claim his first podium of the year.
His teammate David Alonso was taken to the medical centre after the crash for further examinations, which ruled out any possible fractures. The Colombian is in pain after the heavy crash, but he will return to competition stronger than ever.
